TURNING POINTS
What was your biggest career break?
Joining the Political Party’s media team was by far and away my biggest career break. Being at the centre of hard-fought political media battles required a robust approach and cert ainly wasn’t for the faint hearted it prepared me well for what I do now. Many of the contacts I made then are still friends of mine.
What advice would you give to someone climbing the career ladder?
People often get stuck because they can't figure out how to get from Point A to Point Z. What is one thing you could do that would be a next step? Take a class, talk to a friend, read a book on a topic of interest, learn a new skill. Take action on what feels exciting to you. Try to get as close to your contacts as you can. Look out for them and give them stories that aren’t necessarily anything to do with your clients. Remember that in five years’ time some can become a BIG PLAYER.
What characteristics do you prize in new recruits?
I like recruits those who are energetic , enthusiastic and prepared to contribute ideas, even if they don’t necessarily work. Common sense is a very important attribute and rather than you might think. Experience helps, but isn’t top of my list, as I like attitude of people who believes ‘ I can do’ and willing to learn more.
In the world to come each of us will be called to account for all the good things God put on this earth which we refused to enjoy." Learn to appreciate the unfolding process of your life, not just the realization of your dreams.
As very well said by William James,
"The greatest discovery of my generation is that human beings, by changing the inner attitudes of their minds, can change the outer aspects of their lives."
